OTHER PLACES TO FIND GOOD FOOD

These cookbooks, websites, and blogs are my favorites. Worth your time and maybe even your money.

Cookbooks Worth The Shelf Space

These books have earned their space in our small apartment, and even smaller kitchen.

The Food Lab

By J. Kenji López-Alt

This is one of Tom's favorites. It's a marriage of science & food. It can be esoteric and really really specific in ways that don't work for me as a home cook, BUT there are some awesome really basic technique lessons in here. It's worth your time for the section on what tools you need in a kitchen - it's how Tom & I decided what to register for when we got married - and the section on eggs.

Salt Fat Acid Heat

By Samin Nosrat

By now, you have probably read this. But it's worth putting here anyway. Reading this book changed the way I cook. It's less of a cookbook and more of a how to make good food with ingredients you enjoy.  Please, go get it, read it, and then come back and tell me how amazing it was. Oh, and the illustrations are gorgeous. We're planning on framing a few for our kitchen.

Cravings

By Chrissy Teigen

These two books - Cravings and Craving Hungry for More are really fun, relatable, and easy cookbooks. They are awesome for some weeknight staples and Chrissy does a great job with flavor profiles. The Thai-Mom section is my favorite - it's so fun to see into the world of  other people's kitchens, not to mention their childhoods.

Soups & Sides

By Catherine Walthers

My good friend Allie introduced me to this book when she made me a Thai carrot soup in college. The soup was so good, I kept trying to recreate it, and borrow the book from her. Finally I bought my own copy. Every soup I've made in the book has been standout. The Thai Carrot Soup is still my favorite, but the Cauliflower soup with blue cheese is a close second.

Magic On The Internet

The sites I look to over and over again, with varied purposes.

Bon Appétit

I have never made something from here that wasn't at least good. If they print it, you can expect it to be decent. The range is excellent, I can almost always search for whatever I have or am craving and a few recipes pop up. Until recently, this was mostly a place to find recipes, not technique lessons. That's recently changed, and I'm pretty here for it. Really love anything by Molly Baz & Carla Lalli Music. Their youtube channel is also entertaining sometimes.

NYT Cooking

Thanks to my father-in-law, I am the proud owner of a year long NYT Cooking subscription! That is the BIG bummer of this site - you have to pay for it. From the cooking and reading that I've done so far, it is probably worth it. The catalog is pretty limitless, with lots of classics and newer fun recipes. It isn't always approachable, especially if you're a begginer, but if you're into projects, it's amazing. I've especially loved the bread recipes.

Smitten Kitchen

What can I say, I am smitten. LOL, no one else has ever made that joke. Anyway, Deb (who runs Smitten Kitchen) is truly a goddess. She lives in New York, has a tiny kitchen, cooks amazing food, and writes about it. Her recipes are approachable, easy, and fun. I have enjoyed almost every single one I've met. This is a great place to start if you're trying to cook more. It was one of the first places I happened upon when I was trying to up my weeknight game.
